Elaine's Concerning Hobbits Stew

 

FIRST THINGS FIRST Put on the extended edition of the lord of the rings .

ok now that we have the right mood and can bypass the novel explanation of where i got the recipe . I got it from a love of hobbits

 

 Ingredients : 

Cook time ( 5 -7) hours simmering 

Prep time (1 hour )

Meat and broth simmer for 3-5 hours and 

simmer with veggies added ( 2-3 hours) 

5-8 Boneless beef country ribs 

5-8 Bread bowls ( or one for each person you are feeding )

6-8 potatoes , cleaned , cubed , large pieces , skins left on 

6-8 stalks of healthy green onion

6-7 fresh basil leafs only NO STEMS cut into large pieces 

1 -2 cans of CAMPBELL'S French onion 

1-2 cans of CAMPBELL'S beef broth and or beef consume 

1 can of CAMPBELL'S GOLDEN mushroom soup this will thicken the soup and add a smooth flavor 

10-20 White mushrooms cut into thick slices 

3-4 tablespoons of oil heated on a frying pan or cast iron cook pot . 

1 small crock pot or cast iron deep cook pot . 

3-5 TBSP of corn starch mixed with 3/4 cup hot broth to make a rue for thickening  

salt and pepper to taste 


SOUP STEPS :

STEP 1 

plug in your crock pot and turn on to high and let the pot warm up .



add the French onion soup and a full can of water and  1/2 of all herb ingredients 

sear your beef country ribs on all sides , add 1/2 of the basil and 1/2 of the of the green onion to the hot oil with the beef . add a splash of beef broth or beef consume to the pan with the beef oil and herbs if using a cast iron you can fry and just add to the pan when you complete frying step 

cook till herbs have become dark and limp , about 2-5 minutes  

gently add all cooked ingredients to the crock pot or  leave in cast iron and add soup and consume  



SWITCH THE TEMP TO LOW 

Let simmer for 3- 5 hours . you want most of the fat rendered down and the meat to be falling lightly apart 

at 4 hours and 15 minutes  , leaving 45 minutes left in simmer time begin the next step 

STEP 2

while its cooking prep your potatoes and mushrooms . in a large bowl

 add cubed potatoes and sliced mushrooms 

 toss lightly and add salt and pepper to taste . 

In a large deep frying pan over medium heat braze the veggies when lightly cooked and a little browned 

add to your soup 






STEP 3 : TURN YOUR CROCK POT UP TO HIGH 

add the potatoes and the mushrooms mix and fold into the soup . then  sturr ,and cover and let cook for the remaining 2-3 hours leave on high

STEPS FOR BREAD BOWLS 


i get the small rosemary and basil bread bowls from kroger / fry's bakery , 

using a bread knife , while the bread bowl is sitting on the cutting board on the flat side 

cut the top off of each bowl and hollow out the bowl . leaving about an inch of bread and crust 

using the pulled bread to patch any holes you might have made from digging too deeply 

preheat your oven to 350 and place bowls and lids on a wire wrack with the lid resting crust side down .  

bake for 10 - 15 minutes or till bread is warm and the crust is toasted .   


Serve in bread bowl with your favorite steamed veggie on the side
